 - BPA Insight and FAQ’s
Sep 19, 12:43pm (1 review) nutrition, public-health http://www.gerber.com/About/Press_Room_D...- From the page: "Gerber and Nestle have more than 200 years combined history of helping parents raise happy, healthy babies. Nestle Nutrition has a rich tradition of helping moms feed their babies, and generations of moms have trusted us to bring them products that meet the highest standards of safety and nutritional support.
We understand that some parents may be concerned or confused about bisphenol A (BPA). As your trusted partner in early childhood nutrition, we believe that it is important for you to have all the information you need to make choices that you feel are best for your child.
Here are a few key facts for your consideration. More information about specific products can be found at www.gerber.com/products
* BPA is not used in making the plastic cups for GERBER pureed baby food products. It is important to note that even products with the number 7 plastic are not made with BPA, (the number 7 refers to recycling information, not the presence of BPA).
* There is no BPA in cans used to package powdered NESTLe GOOD START infant formula, which accounts for more than 80 percent of the infant formula we sell.
* Gerber currently offers a wide selection of BPA-free bottles, pacifiers and cups, including our best-selling CLEAR VIEW bottles. Plus, we have committed to making our entire line of accessories products BPA-free by the end of 2008.
* The epoxy lining of metal cans used for our liquid infant formula products, including concentrated and ready-to-feed, helps protect their nutrient levels and keep them safe from contamination. Leading authorities have stated that trace (extremely small) amounts of BPA in the epoxy lining are well below the levels that could cause any harm to infant or child health.
* All glass-jarred baby food lids contain minimal amounts of epoxy resin, which helps protect the products' nutrient levels and prevent contamination. Leading authorities have stated that trace (extremely small) amounts of BPA in the epoxy lining are well below the levels that could cause any harm to infant or child health.
Parents with questions can call our START HEALTHY, STAY HEALTHY Resource Center, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at 1-800-4-Gerber."
Well, I will tell you what. I am looking at that #7 on the bottom of a container of Gerber strained green beans that I was about to feed to my 11-mo-old grandson. I am kind of stigmied by this - this is what WIKI says about the #7: "There are seven classes of plastics used in packaging applications. Type 7 is the catch-all "other" class, and some type 7 plastics, such as polycarbonate (sometimes identified with the letters "PC" near the recycling symbol) and epoxy resins, are made from bisphenol A monomer. When such plastics are exposed to hot liquids, bisphenol A leaches out 55 times faster than it does under normal conditions, at up to 32 ng/hour." This might be the last time I use store-bought baby food. Sht. Thankfully I NEVER heat this stuff in the container. ANd if I do buy next time I will buy GLASS.
